Cha Mirisa, a name synonymous with female empowerment in Korea, established Duksung Girls’ High School. It all began in 1920, in the wake of the March First Movement. This movement ignited a powerful drive for better education. Mirisa, a devout Roman Catholic and a prominent leader of the Joseon Women’s Education Society, answered this call. She founded the Geunhwa Academy, a beacon of hope for young women seeking knowledge and independence. Duksung Girls’ High School carries this legacy forward. The school stands as a testament to Mirisa’s unwavering dedication and vision. Originally nestled within the historic Unhyeongung Palace grounds, Duksung Girls’ High School relocated in 1984. Its current home is in the serene Dobong District of Seoul. The school is close to both Bukhan Mountain and Dobong Mountain. Duksung, as it affectionately came to be known, was not always its name. The original name, Geunhwa, meaning “rose of Sharon,” symbolized Korea’s national flower. However, under pressure from Japanese authorities, the name was changed in 1938 to Duksung. Despite this forced change, the school’s commitment to nurturing young women never wavered. Duksung Girls’ High School has grown significantly since its inception. As of 2022, the school boasts a vibrant student body of approximately 6,944 students. A dedicated faculty of 469 members guides and inspires these young minds. Supporting the school’s operations is a staff of 121 individuals. The school is renowned for its rich history and academic excellence. Duksung Girls’ High School offers a wide range of programs and extracurricular activities. It is a place where young women continue to be empowered to achieve their full potential.
