Did you ever hear of a park named after a street corner? Duke Park got its unique name from the intersection of Dumont and Blake Avenues. This little oasis in the bustling city was once a site of two apartment buildings. Vandals destroyed these buildings in the mid-1960s. By 1967, the city leased the property to the Parks Department. A report from 1969 describes Duke Park as being in “good condition, though not completely developed”. Back then, the park featured benches, sandboxes, and jungle gyms for the local children. Duke Park received a boost in 1987. It officially became Hudd Park. This happened because of a Federal Urban Beautification Demonstration Grant. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded this grant. It was part of their program to provide small recreation facilities in crowded urban areas. Duke Park may be small. But it plays an important role in the community. It offers a welcome green space in a dense urban environment. It’s a testament to the city’s efforts to revitalize and beautify its neighborhoods.
