What if I told you that the key to a city’s prosperity for over two thousand years wasn’t gold, oil, or technology, but water? Right here, in front of us, stands the Dujiangyan, not a dam as you might expect, but an ingenious irrigation system. Dujiangyan is more than just a marvel of ancient engineering. Built in 256 BC, during the Qin dynasty, the Dujiangyan has been irrigating the Chengdu Plain for over two millennia. This incredible feat of engineering was the brainchild of Li Bing, a governor of Shu, and his son. Instead, he devised a system that cleverly redirects and divides the river’s flow, ensuring both flood control and irrigation. At the heart of the system is the Yuzui, or Fish Mouth Levee, which splits the river into two channels. The inner channel, deep and narrow, carries water to the Chengdu Plain, while the outer channel, shallow and wide, diverts excess water, preventing floods. But Li Bing’s ingenuity didn’t stop there. He incorporated two other ingenious elements: the Feishayan, or Flying Sand Weir, and the Baopingkou, or Bottle-Neck Channel. The Flying Sand Weir, as its name implies, flushes out excess sediment, while the Bottle-Neck Channel, carved through a mountain, acts as a final control point, further regulating the water flow. The effectiveness of the Dujiangyan is evident in the lush greenery and fertile fields surrounding Chengdu. Thanks to Li Bing’s vision, this region, known as the “Land of Abundance,” has enjoyed agricultural prosperity and remarkable stability for centuries.
