Thirty-seven years ago a maintenance shed transformed. This is the Duckdalben International Seamen’s Club. It began humbly. A port railway’s shed became an office. Finally it became a haven. A haven for sailors from over 100 countries.
The Duckdalben International Seamen’s Club opened in 1986. It was a small facility. It could only accommodate 15 to 20 visitors. Demand soared. Soon 120 seafarers visited daily. The original structure proved too small.
An expansion followed in 1994. The International Transport Workers’ Federation ITF provided generous funding. A larger entrance hall appeared. A billiard room and a multi-purpose hall were added. This hall could become a table tennis room or a meeting space. Upstairs a non-denominational Room of Silence chapel offered solace. The expansion finished in 1995.
Further growth came in 2003. A conservatory with a fireplace emerged. It also served as a library. Foreign newspapers were stocked alongside books. In 2015 an annex provided more office space. The Duckdalben International Seamen’s Club kept growing to meet the needs of seafarers.
The Duckdalben International Seamen’s Club offers more than just shelter. Seafarers find warm clothing. They find a place to relax. Billiards table tennis table football and darts are available. A small sports field allows for exercise rarely possible at sea. Computers and internet access are free. The club even procures everyday items requested by sailors. Free Wi-Fi covers the whole building.
The club’s bus service is vital. Ships often moor far from the club. The Duckdalben International Seamen’s Club provides free transportation. Their buses travel 250000 km annually in the port. Since 1986 over 1000000 guests have visited the club. It’s a true testament to the need for this incredible place.
The Duckdalben International Seamen’s Club was not always lauded. In 2010 it was named one of the world’s five best clubs. In 2011 it achieved the highest honor. It was named the Seafarers’ Centre of the Year. In 2016 ISWAN gave the club a Judges’ Special Award. This recognition celebrated 30 years of dedicated service.
