The Dubai World Trade Centre wasn’t always this sprawling complex. It began as a single tower. The Sheikh Rashid Tower opened in 1979. Queen Elizabeth II herself inaugurated it. Can you imagine the excitement?
Designed by John R Harris it was initially planned as a smaller building. Sheikh Rashid envisioned something bigger. Something that would mark Dubai’s place on the world stage. A friendly competition with Abu Dhabi to build the tallest tower in the UAE even spurred its height to 39 stories. A mast was added to win that friendly contest. A testament to ambition.
The original tower was impressive. It quickly became a landmark. The striking white of its concrete facade stood out against the desert sky. It’s even featured on the 100 AED note.
The Dubai World Trade Centre isn’t just a tower. It’s a business district. It includes the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. This vast complex hosts major international events. Think Gulfood and GITEX. Millions of visitors come annually.
Over the years the centre expanded dramatically. New exhibition halls appeared. One Central a modern commercial development was built. It has countless office spaces and retail shops. Multiple hotels now cater to visitors. The original Hilton Hotel was replaced by these modern high rises.
In 2015 the Dubai World Trade Centre Authority was established. This made the district a free zone. Businesses from all over the world flocked here. More than 2000 companies across 40 industries made their home here.
In 2021 the Dubai World Trade Centre’s mandate was expanded further. It now includes virtual assets and cryptocurrencies. It’s a modern hub for traditional and new economies.
