“Demolished” is the first word that comes to mind as we approach this area. Once destined to be a glittering jewel, we are standing in front of what was to be the Dubai Pearl.
The Dubai Pearl was planned as a 73-story residential skyscraper project. It was located along Al Sufouh Road in Dubai. The project was initially announced back in 2002.
Imagine this: four mixed-use towers connected at the base. A sky bridge would have joined them at the top. The Dubai Pearl was designed to house 9000 residents. Its commercial sector would have employed 12000 people. It was an ambitious vision.
Construction first started in 2004. The original estimated completion date was 2006. But construction was put on hold from 2006 to 2022. Sadly the Dubai Pearl was never completed. Demolition began in January 2023. By early 2024, it was fully demolished.
The structural design was carried out by e-Construct. This Dubai-based engineering firm played a crucial role. The project was estimated to cost $4 billion. That is about Dh14.6 billion.
The Dubai Pearl project had its share of investment issues. Omnix Group launched it in 2002. Tecom Group acquired it in 2007. Later that year, it was sold to Abu Dhabi Al-Fahim Group. Progress stalled after that. In 2014, Chow Tai Fook Endowment Industry Investment Development bought a $1.9 billion share. They promised to restart the project. But that never happened.
In July 2016, construction cranes were removed from the site. The complex was left abandoned.
But, let’s talk about a fascinating proposal for this location. Michael Henderson, a Canadian businessman, co-founded Moon World Resorts Inc. He proposed Project Moon. It is a 900-foot replica of the Moon. It would sit on top of a circular 100-foot building. This unique structure would house a 4000-room hotel. There would be an area seating 10000 people. Possibly, a casino could be included. This would give visitors an experience simulating a walk on the Moon. At night, it would be lighted mimicking the phases of the Moon.
The Dubai Pearl never reached its potential. Yet its story is a reminder of Dubai’s ambition. It also shows the challenges of large-scale development. As we look at this cleared site, we can imagine what might have been. We can also anticipate the next visionary project that will rise here. Perhaps, even a walk on the moon.
