“One Energy Plaza” a fitting address for a company powering millions. That’s where we find the DTE Energy Headquarters, also known as DTE Energy Plaza. It’s more than just an office complex. This Detroit landmark stands as a testament to DTE Energy’s long-standing presence and impact on the region.

Did you know that DTE Energy has been around since 1903? It began as Detroit Edison. Today, it serves 2.3 million electric customers in Southeast Michigan. It also provides natural gas to 1.3 million customers throughout Michigan. That is a lot of power.

Look up at the tallest of the three buildings here. That’s the Walker Cisler Building. It’s named after DTE’s chairman during its construction. Completed in 1971, this skyscraper reaches 374 feet. The lighted DTE signs at the top are a recognizable part of the Detroit skyline.

Notice the architectural style. It’s International, characterized by a steel frame and glass curtain wall. It might remind you of the nearby Executive Plaza Building. This design reflects the era’s emphasis on sleek modernism.

But the DTE Energy Plaza is not just the Walker Cisler Building. Take a look around. The complex includes the General Office Building and the Service Building. The General Office Building was built in 1921. Its Renaissance Revival style stands in contrast to the modern skyscraper. The Service Building, completed in 1938, is a low-rise structure.

In 2007, DTE transformed the area around its headquarters. They created landscaped areas with reflecting pools and walkways. These improvements offer a green oasis in the heart of downtown Detroit. You can see these improvements from the MGM Grand Casino parking area.

Also the Electrical Systems Operations Center Building was completed in 2021. It ensures the smooth operation of DTE’s electrical systems. The Service Building and the ESOC Building are connected to the MGM Grand Casino Parking structure via a covered walkway. DTE shares use of the parking structure along with casino guests.

Beyond its physical structures, DTE Energy is a major player in Michigan’s energy landscape. DTE Electric uses diverse sources to generate electricity. These sources include coal, nuclear fuel and natural gas. Also hydroelectric pumped storage and renewable sources are included. DTE Gas purchases, stores, transmits and distributes natural gas.

The company is also expanding into renewable energy. In January 2024, DTE partnered with Dearborn to supply electricity from wind and solar sources. In June 2024, DTE announced plans to build a battery energy storage center. This center will be located at the retired Trenton Channel coal plant.

DTE Energy is headquartered right here. Its operations extend far beyond Michigan. The company has non-utility businesses across the United States. These businesses focus on industrial energy services and renewable natural gas. Also energy marketing and trading.

So, as you stand here at the DTE Energy Plaza, remember that you’re looking at more than just buildings. You’re seeing a symbol of Detroit’s energy future. From its historic roots to its modern innovations, DTE Energy continues to shape the region’s landscape. It powers homes and businesses.
