What echoes louder, the beat of a drum or the trumpet of an elephant? Here at the Drummer and Elephant Sculpture, that question takes on a beautiful, tangible form. The Drummer and Elephant Sculpture isn’t just a metal artwork; it’s a tribute. It’s a story captured in iron and artistry. This magnificent creation pays homage to Ruwan Raja, a beloved temple elephant. Ruwan Raja wasn’t just any elephant. He served the Gangaramaya Temple, carrying the sacred relic casket in numerous peraheras across Sri Lanka. His presence was grand, his service invaluable. When he died in 2003, the temple wanted to create a memorial that truly reflected his majesty. They found their artist in a young, talented sculptor, 19-year-old Kasun Wickramasinghe. Kasun, a passionate admirer of elephants, poured his heart and soul into this project. He used Ruwan Raja’s actual skull and tusks, incorporating them into a towering 11-foot sculpture. The framework was built with iron rods, set upon a concrete platform. Kasun then meticulously covered the structure in cement, layer by painstaking layer, shaping it into the lifelike form of the revered elephant. Imagine the dedication. Just a month after completing this monumental work, Kasun sat for his Advanced Level examinations. He spent nine months bringing Ruwan Raja back to life in this incredible form. He faced challenges. He’d never mixed cement before, and capturing the true essence of Ruwan Raja was a daunting task. But with the help of friends and his own artistic vision, he succeeded. The Drummer and Elephant Sculpture stands as a testament to both the majestic animal and the talented artist who immortalized him. It’s a blend of love, loss, and artistic brilliance. It’s a story whispered in the clanging of metal, a memory etched in the contours of cement. It’s a reminder that even in stillness, there can be a resounding echo.
