Drumcondra St George’s Cemetery’s story began in 1793. Luke Gardiner donated the land for a new church and cemetery. But the church was built elsewhere. It was built at Hardwicke Place. Francis Johnston designed it in 1814. The land on Whitworth Road then remained a parish cemetery.
The Whitworth Fever Hospital was built in front of the site in 1818. It later became Drumcondra Hospital. The NCBI has occupied it since 1987.
