Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Beijing’s history lies the Drum Tower. This magnificent structure has witnessed centuries of change, echoing with the rhythms of time. The Drum Tower, or Gulou, stands proudly at the northern end of the Inner City’s central axis. It’s more than just a tourist attraction. It’s a time capsule, holding within its walls the stories of emperors, officials, and ordinary citizens. Built in 1272 during the Yuan Dynasty, the Drum Tower was initially known as the Tower of Orderly Administration. It symbolized the elements of the universe according to ancient Chinese beliefs: metal, wood, water, fire, earth, the sun, and the moon. Imagine the city of Khanbaliq, the Drum Tower at its heart, regulating the pulse of daily life. The Drum Tower’s role evolved. Originally built for musical purposes, its primary function shifted to announcing the time. Can you hear the rhythmic beating of the massive drum, resonating across the city? This marked the hours for centuries, dictating the routines of officials and commoners alike. The sound guided officials attending morning court, signaling when to rise, assemble, and finally enter the Imperial Palace. The year 1924 marked a turning point. The last emperor was expelled from the Forbidden City, and Western timekeeping methods replaced the ancient traditions. The Drum Tower’s official timekeeping role ended. Its name even changed to the Tower of Clarifying Shame, becoming a museum showcasing artifacts from historical events like the Eight-Nation Alliance’s invasion. Today, the Drum Tower’s upper story serves as the People’s Cultural Hall of the Dongcheng District. Yet, it hasn’t forgotten its past. One of the original 25 drums remains, its ox-hide head a testament to its long history. The nearby Bell Tower complements the Drum Tower, its 33-meter height a striking counterpoint to the Drum Tower’s 47 meters. Together, they once dominated the Beijing skyline.
