Established in 1912 Druid Hills Golf Club boasts a rich history. Prominent Atlantans founded it. Their names are still linked to city landmarks. Asa Candler and Ernest Woodruff were among them. A tragic event marked the club’s early years. J Douglas Edgar the head professional died mysteriously in 1921. He was found bleeding on West Peachtree Street. The case remains unsolved. Then in 1924 a fire gutted the clubhouse. It caused $100000 in damage. The clubhouse was quickly rebuilt. It’s a testament to the club’s resilience.
President Warren G Harding visited in 1921. He had lunch at the club. This visit highlighted the club’s prestige. The course underwent significant renovations in 1935 and again in 2003. A.W Tillinghast and Bob Cupp were behind these updates. The club even hosted the Dogwood Invitational a prestigious men’s amateur tournament. Thirteen-year-old Bobby Jones won the club championship in 1915. This was one of many victories for this golfing legend.
