The Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium emerged from the ashes of wartime destruction. Numerous school buildings in Freiburg were heavily damaged. Some like the Berthold-Gymnasium were completely destroyed. Only a few survived. The Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium began as a response to a severe shortage of school space.
Initially a girls’ school it was established in 1946. It shared space with the Berthold-Gymnasium. They operated in a three-shift system. Students attended lessons in different time slots throughout the day. In 1948 the school received its current name. This is a tribute to Annette von Droste-Hülshoff a renowned German poet. The city of Freiburg recognizing the need for more space decided to build new schools.
The Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium’s current building designed by Behnisch & Partner opened in 1966. It’s a striking structure. Three differently sized square buildings create a unique composition. This composition is mirrored in the school logo. The design reflects the ideals of the young republic. Its open plan encouraged interaction and a sense of community. Classrooms were grouped around a central hall. It was used by students and teachers alike. The building underwent major renovations between 2006 and 2009. It was updated to become a full-day school.
Today the Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium is more than just a place of learning. It’s a UNESCO project school. It’s known for its commitment to democracy environmental protection and global understanding. The school boasts a broad range of extracurricular activities. These include a student-run company that manages the school’s cafeteria and a running team that participates in local marathons. It’s also known for its extensive partnerships with schools in Nicaragua Uganda and the United States.
