“Germany will be the first European nation to accept Christian Science.” That’s what Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, predicted. We are standing in front of Dritte Kirche Christi, Wissenschaftler, Berlin. It stands as a testament to that prophecy and the enduring appeal of Christian Science in Germany.

Christian Science’s introduction to Germany began with individuals like Hans Eckert and Bertha Günther-Peterson. Eckert learned about Christian Science in the United States. He returned to Germany and introduced it in the Stuttgart area in 1894. Günther-Peterson heard about Christian Science from a friend in the United States. She started studying it in 1894.

Interestingly, the first translation of Mary Baker Eddy’s writings authorized by her was into German. This demonstrates the importance she placed on the German field. The authorized publication of her principal book, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” featured alternate pages in English and German from 1912. This gave a strong boost to the Christian Science movement in Germany.

Bertha Günther-Peterson even had the honor of meeting Mary Baker Eddy. She received a special permission to teach Christian Science. This highlighted the dedication to spreading the teachings within Germany.

Frances Thurber Seal also played a vital role in establishing Christian Science in Germany. She helped establish two branch churches. One was in Dresden and the other one was the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Berlin.

Even when facing opposition from authorities, the early Christian Scientists stood firm. They defended their right to worship and practice their faith. One notable event involved Frances Thurber Seal. She confronted the President of Police in Berlin. She asserted their right to worship God in their own way. She reminded him that German law did not forbid it.

During wartime, Christian Scientists in Germany faced immense challenges. They even faced arrest and bans on practicing their religion. Despite the obstacles, they continued to support each other. They secretly copied Bible Lessons and held services in small groups.

After World War II, The Mother Church in Boston provided aid to Christian Scientists in the Netherlands. This showcased the unity and support within the Christian Science community.

Dritte Kirche Christi, Wissenschaftler, Berlin is a symbol of resilience. It represents dedication and the lasting impact of Christian Science in Germany. From its humble beginnings to its present-day presence, the church continues to offer a space for worship, healing, and spiritual growth.
