Have you ever walked across a bridge that connects two worlds? The Driscoll Center in Denver isn’t just a building it’s a portal. A portal between classes lectures and student life. It’s a place where the University of Denver’s history unfolds before your very eyes.
This impressive structure opened in 1984. It wasn’t just any building though. The Driscoll Center was designed to be the heart of campus life. Its sprawling interior housed a bookstore a cafe and even a bridge spanning Evans Avenue. Students could cross the bustling street without ever stepping outside. This is a fact often overlooked when discussing the building.
Imagine the hustle and bustle of students rushing between classes. The scent of coffee mingling with the smell of freshly printed textbooks. The chatter of friends catching up during lunch breaks. These are just snapshots of the vibrant student life once found within the Driscoll Center’s walls. The photos in the University of Denver archives showcase these daily scenes. Thousands of students traversed that iconic bridge. Countless friendships formed in its hallways. Many memories were made within its walls. The bookstore was a student’s haven. Rows upon rows of books beckoned students to explore. The cafe was a place to relax and refuel. These seemingly ordinary places held significance in the lives of many.
But the Driscoll Center wasn’t immune to the passage of time. In 2018 the North section of the building was demolished. This is another key fact people miss. This demolition marked the beginning of a new chapter. A chapter focused on building a new and more modern campus center.
The new Driscoll Center a.k.a the Community Commons is now envisioned as a multi-floor hub. It will still be a gathering place for the students but with updated facilities. The plan includes a rooftop area. It will provide a scenic view of the campus and the surrounding city. This will certainly become a new and memorable student landmark.
So as you stand here today looking at the Driscoll Center’s present form you’re witnessing not just a building but a living testament to the ever-evolving life of the University of Denver. It’s a place where the past meets the future a place where memories are made and history continues to unfold.
