Around 1880, the mill was enlarged. However, disaster struck in 1918. A fire destroyed Dripps Mill. William Alexander’s son and grandson rebuilt it. They increased its size even further. Oatmeal milling stopped. Motor lorries replaced horses and carts.
For 40 years, the mill focused on animal feed production. This supported local farmers. By the 1960s, Glasgow and East Kilbride grew. Farms diminished. The demand shifted from agricultural to equestrian customers. Leisure related customers also appeared.
Today, Wm Alexander and Son operate a country store at Dripps Mill. They specialize in equestrian, farm, and pet merchandise. Their customer base spans west and central Scotland. Over a thousand lines of feeding and associated items are stocked. These include small animal feed, bedding, and wild bird feed.
The premises are registered with authorities. They can supply animal medicines. Freshly milled products like rolled oats are available. Long gone are the horses and carts. Forklifts and articulated trucks now fill their place.
Wm Alexander & Son celebrated its 150th anniversary. The company was founded five generations ago. It started at William Alexander’s farm on Waterfoot Row. This was a mile west of Thorntonhall. The company has won awards. In 2006, they received an award. It was in the British Equestrian Trade Association Feed Merchant of the Year class. In 2007, they were commended. This was in the BETA Equestrian Retailer of the Year.
