Once upon a time, three inlets shaped the destiny of a small village. Those three inlets are why we are standing here in Dresano.
Dresano is a comune in the Metropolitan City of Milan. It is in the Lombardy region of Italy. Dresano is about 20 kilometers southeast of Milan.
The name Dresano evolved from the presence of these swampy inlets. They were called Tresseno, then Tressano, Tresano, and finally Dresano. Look closely at Dresano’s coat of arms. You’ll see those three inlets. They sit below three poplar trees. Poplar trees were very common here.
The old village of Dresano holds ancient secrets. On Piazza Manzoni’s east side, you can see a massive wooden double door. It was once part of a Benedictine convent. The monks worked hard to drain and cultivate the swampy lands. They fought against malaria in this area.
The climate here brings sultry summers. Winters are rainy and cold. In 1995, heavy snowfall blocked roads. Schools closed for days. Late August and early September bring violent thunderstorms.
Dresano is divided into four areas. There’s the old village called Dresano Vecchio. You have Madonnina built in the 1960s. Then there’s Villaggio Ambrosiano from the 1970s. Finally, Villaggio Helios which began in the 1990s.
Cascina Belpensiero stands as one of the oldest farms near Dresano. It has a centuries-old tree in its farmyard. Historical records mention this dairy farm as far back as 1500. It is surrounded by fields about one kilometer from Dresano.
Each May, Dresano hosts a footrace. It is called “Quater Pass per un Vitel.” That means “four steps for a calf.” It is in the local dialect. Gruppo Sportivo Marciatori San Giorgio organizes it. The prize was once a live calf. Now, it is an award. You can choose from 6, 12, or 21-kilometer races.
Dresano has seen many mayors. Luigi Giuseppe Preda was mayor from 1945 to 1960. More recently, Vito Penta served from 2012 to 2021. Now, Nicola Infante is the current mayor since 2021.
Sport is important in Dresano. Gruppo Sportivo Marciatori San Giorgio is a walking group. Auser helps the elderly and disabled. Dresano Calcio is the local soccer team. Dresano Basket is for basketball fans.
Dresano hosts several events. There’s Carnevale Dresanese in February. In April, Dresano Fiorita showcases flowers. The “Quater Pass per un Vitel” footrace occurs in June. Also in June, there is Marcia Serale del Belpensiero. It’s a non-competitive night footrace. The Festa dell’Uva celebrates the grapevine in September.
Dresano also values ecology. The town has a water purification plant. It is near the Addetta floodway close to Balbiano.
Fields around Dresano are actively farmed. Farmers grow wheat, barley, fodder maize, and oilseed rape.
Biodiversity has increased in recent years. Various animals and plants thrive along waterways. You might spot a grey heron or pheasant. Maybe even a kingfisher.
Dresano is more than just a location. It is a living testament to resilience. It is a place where history, nature, and community intertwine.
