Did the Dreizehnerdenkmal always look like this? This six-meter-high sandstone pyramid, crowned with an Iron Cross, stands as a stark reminder of past conflicts. The Dreizehnerdenkmal was built between 1923 and 1925 to commemorate the soldiers of the 13th Infantry Regiment who fell in World War I. Originally, it honored the “Herwarth von Bittenfeld” (1st Westphalian) Regiment and the Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 13. After World War II, its dedication expanded. It now includes the fallen soldiers of the Infantry and Panzergrenadier Regiment No. 79, which followed in the 13th’s tradition. The Dreizehnerdenkmal is more than just a pyramid. Look closer. A powerful lion, carved in high relief, adorns the front. It symbolizes strength and bravery. On the back, a poignant relief depicts a naked warrior, his arm resting on a sword, symbolizing resurrection for future battles. A laurel-wreathed helmet lies beside him, a classic symbol of victory. The inscription “Treue um Treue” (Loyalty for Loyalty) arches above the lion. Added in 1930, another inscription lists the staggering number of casualties from the 13th Infantry Regiment. In 1954, further inscriptions were added, honoring the fallen soldiers of the 79th Regiment and the dead of both World Wars. The Dreizehnerdenkmal is a powerful symbol, steeped in history and complex meaning. For many years, it served as the central location for Volkstrauertag (National Day of Mourning) commemorations in Münster, until 2016. This monument’s history reflects the changing tides of remembrance and the ongoing struggle to make sense of the past.
