Can a stadium whisper tales of triumph and transition? The Dreisamstadion, nestled near the flowing Dreisam River, certainly can. This historic stadium, once the vibrant heart of SC Freiburg’s football legacy, now echoes with memories of roaring crowds and bygone eras. Dreisamstadion served as the home ground for SC Freiburg from 1954 to 2021. The story of Dreisamstadion begins with humble origins. The initial sports field, opened in 1954, gradually transformed into a proper stadium. The 1970s brought covered seats. Following SC Freiburg’s promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 1978, the stadium saw its first major expansion, adding a main stand and increasing capacity. The 1990s ushered in an era of modernization, with the installation of floodlights and further expansions. This was driven by the club’s promotion to the 1. Bundesliga in 1993. Interestingly, in the 1990s, Dreisamstadion adopted an innovative approach to energy. It became the first solar-powered stadium in Germany thanks to photovoltaic panels installed on the roof. This eco-conscious approach foreshadowed the club’s future move to a more sustainable stadium. Dreisamstadion held a unique charm, despite some quirks. The pitch was technically too short by UEFA standards, and one goal sat lower than the other due to the sloping terrain. These imperfections, however, added to the stadium’s character and arguably made it a challenging venue for visiting teams. Dreisamstadion witnessed numerous historic moments, including UEFA Cup matches and international games. Even the Dutch national team used it as a training ground during the 2006 World Cup. Despite numerous renovations, by the 2010s, it became clear that further modernizing Dreisamstadion was impractical. A referendum in 2015 sealed the stadium’s fate, with Freiburg citizens voting to construct a new, larger stadium. The Europa-Park Stadion opened in 2021, marking the end of an era for Dreisamstadion. The final Bundesliga match at Dreisamstadion was a 3-0 victory for SC Freiburg against Augsburg on September 26, 2021. The stadium’s final Bundesliga goal count stood at a symbolic 999, forever a reminder of the countless moments of passion and sporting drama witnessed within its walls. Although SC Freiburg moved to their new home, the Dreisamstadion remains. It now serves as the training ground for SC Freiburg’s reserve and women’s teams, ensuring that its legacy continues. The stadium’s name, once subject to various sponsorship deals, has reverted back to its original Dreisamstadion. This return to its roots symbolizes the enduring connection between the stadium, the club, and the city of Freiburg.
