Picture the Drei-Brüderschacht. A seemingly ordinary shaft. Yet its story is one of innovation resilience and the relentless pursuit of wealth. Standing before this historic site you can almost feel the echoes of centuries of toil.

The Drei-Brüderschacht in Freiberg’s Zug district wasn’t just any mine. It began life as part of a larger drainage project in 1791. Two prominent mines the Beschert-Glück-Fundgrube and the Segen Gottes Herzog August united their efforts. They aimed to access deeper silver deposits. The result was the Drei-Brüderschacht. Its innovative water-powered technology was a marvel. Two massive water wheels at a depth of over 120 meters powered pumps and hauled materials to the surface.

But alas deep beneath the surface the hoped-for silver bonanza failed to materialize. The shaft reached 390 meters yet ore reserves were disappointing. This coupled with a plummeting silver price in the late 19th century spelled trouble. The discovery of easily accessible silver overseas and the rise of gold as the preferred currency after 1871 threatened to ruin Saxony’s mining industry. Freiberg was on the brink.

However the Drei-Brüderschacht’s story wasn’t over. The dawn of the 20th century brought new technological hope. Powered mining presented a solution. And more importantly electricity promised to revitalize Freiberg. A hydroelectric power plant inside the mountain was revolutionary.

The dormant Drei-Brüderschacht was revived. A cavern was carved above the Rothschönberger Stolln to house turbines and generators. On Christmas Eve 1914 the cavern power plant ceremoniously opened. “Clean electricity” was generated underground. This innovative plant along with a sister station supplied Freiberg with up to 10 MVA. It couldn’t save mining but it saved the region’s economy.

The Drei-Brüderschacht’s power station ran until 1972. Neglect followed its closure. The 2002 floods revealed the importance of maintaining such facilities as the Rothschönberger Stolln. Repairs to the Drei-Brüderschacht have made it the southernmost access point for the tunnel’s maintenance. The Drei-Brüderschacht’s journey is a testament to human ingenuity. From a silver mine to a pioneering power plant it stands as a symbol of adaptation progress and a reminder of the Ore Mountains’ rich industrial heritage.
