What marks the spot where prayers were once offered for the condemned? Right here, before you, stand the Drei Kreuz, a triple cross sheltered under a roof. This unassuming monument marks a site of profound historical significance. The Drei Kreuz, also known as “Die drei Kreuze in Schallmoos”, stands as a solemn reminder of Salzburg’s past. This spot, once just outside the city walls, was the location of Salzburg’s execution grounds during the Middle Ages. Imagine the dread of those who walked this path, their final moments shadowed by these three crosses. In 1599, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, a man known for his ambition and his desire to modernize Salzburg, ordered the removal of the execution grounds. He sought to reshape the city, to create a Salzburg that reflected the grandeur of Rome, the center of Christendom. Yet, even as he sought to erase the grim reminders of the past, he recognized the need for remembrance. In place of the execution site, he erected the Drei Kreuz, a lasting memorial to those who met their end here. The inscription on the cross tells the story, explaining that this was the place where the condemned offered their last prayers. Though simple in appearance, the Drei Kreuz offers a powerful reflection on the passage of time, the changing face of a city, and the enduring power of memory.
