Wow look at Dreamworld. This isn’t just a theme park. It’s a living testament to a dream. John Longhurst’s dream to be precise. Back in 1974 he bought 85 hectares of land. He envisioned a place for families. A place filled with Aussie charm. He even hired Disneyland designers. Can you believe that?
Dreamworld opened its gates in December 1981. Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen the then Premier of Queensland officially opened it. The park featured the IMAX Theatre. That’s now the Dreamworld Cinema. There was also a Baldwin Locomotive. It’s still running as the Dreamworld Express.
The 1980s saw Dreamworld grow rapidly. Thunderbolt opened as the world’s longest steel double-loop roller coaster. Blue Lagoon a water park also debuted. The park even added its third mascot Belinda Brown. It wasn’t all smooth sailing though. In 2016 a tragic accident occurred on the Thunder River Rapids Ride. This resulted in the death of four people. The ride was permanently closed and demolished. It was a devastating blow to the park and the community.
Dreamworld didn’t give up though. It continued to evolve adding new rides and experiences. The Sky Voyager a flying theatre opened in 2019. The Steel Taipan a multi-launch coaster was added later. Dreamworld is constantly reinventing itself. New areas like Rivertown were added in 2024. This shows Dreamworld’s commitment to providing unforgettable experiences for visitors.
