Here stands Dragón. It is not just a sculpture. It is a symbol of resilience in the La Elipa neighborhood of Madrid.
The Dragón was built in 1981. It quickly became the centerpiece of a popular playground. Generations of children enjoyed sliding down its mouth.
But time took its toll. The city council decided the dragon was unsafe. Demolishing it seemed inevitable. However, the community felt too strongly about it. They would not let it disappear.
Although the playground was remodeled, the green dragon remained. It became more than a play structure. It symbolized the community’s ability to protect what was theirs.
For years, the Dragón slowly decayed. It was covered in dirt and graffiti. Its disappearance seemed certain. But in September 2013, the neighbors acted. They restored the dragon. They removed the grime and graffiti.
Now, the Dragón smiles. At least, that is what the neighbors say. It smiles because it survived. It overcame neglect and potential demolition.
The Dragón acquired symbolic value. It evokes memories and feelings. It is a source of pride for the area of Madrid.
To reach El Dragón de la Elipa, take the subway. Get off at the La Elipa Metro stop on line 2. Walk ten minutes along Marqués de Corbera street. Turn onto San Maximiliano street. You will find the playground and the Dragón there.
The Lucky Dragon pub is quite different. It is located on Estrella street. A lucky dragon adorns the facade. Graffiti artist Spok Brillor created it.
Inside, the pub resembles a Chinatown alleyway. Lanterns, neon lights and pagoda roofs add to the atmosphere. Many dragons decorate the space.
The DJ booth looks like a street food stall. DJs play italo-disco, disco, salsa and house music. The Parrots, Sevenmad and Misterpiro are among the residents.
Downstairs, the decor evokes Beijing’s private clubs. Damask fabrics and murals from the Mandarin Empire decorate the space. There is also another DJ table and a karaoke setup. Guests can sing in Chinese and Spanish.
