Established in 1920 Dr Rafi Ahmed Dental College and Hospital stands as a testament to pioneering dentistry in India. This venerable institution wasn’t built overnight. It began as a single-man endeavor. Dr Rafiuddin Ahmed’s vision brought this dream to fruition. He poured his heart and soul into establishing India’s first dental college.
Dr Rafiuddin Ahmed a visionary leader was born in 1890. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1915. Returning to India he faced significant challenges. Dentistry wasn’t well-established. He started his practice in Kolkata. His skills and dedication were quickly recognized. However he dreamed bigger. He wanted to revolutionize dental education in India.
In 1920 his dream materialized. He founded the Calcutta Dental College and Hospital. This monumental step provided aspiring dentists with formal training. The college started small operating from his own clinic. Initially it only had 11 students. Dr Ahmed personally funded the college. He even sold his properties to keep it afloat. The college faced many challenges including opposition from those who saw dentistry as inferior. Financial difficulties were also a constant struggle. Despite these obstacles his passion and commitment never wavered.
Dr Ahmed’s hard work led to recognition. The college eventually became part of the University of Calcutta. It became a leader in dental education. Dr Ahmed played a crucial role in establishing the Indian Dental Association in 1946. He was also instrumental in drafting the Dentists Act of 1948. These actions standardized dental practices ensuring ethical and professional standards. He trained countless students many becoming leaders in the field. In 1964 he received the Padma Bhushan for his contributions.
Today Dr Rafi Ahmed Dental College and Hospital continues his legacy. It’s a sprawling institution with over 200 dental chairs. It offers undergraduate BDS and postgraduate MDS programs. The college has two campuses new and old. Both are used for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Clinical training facilities are available at NRS Medical College. There are separate hostels for boys and girls. Students are admitted based on NEET scores for undergraduate programs. Postgraduate admissions depend on NEET MDS scores. The legacy of Dr Rafiuddin Ahmed and this institution lives on. It trains dentists who serve the oral health needs of West Bengal and beyond.
