Before you stands the Dr Ludwig Meyn Stele. A simple yet significant monument. It commemorates a remarkable man. A pioneer in his field.

Dr Ludwig Meyn was a true polymath. He excelled as an agricultural scientist soil scientist geologist and journalist. He even dabbled in poetry. His contributions to science were immense. Especially his pioneering work in oil production.

Imagine 1856. Years before Edwin Drake’s famous Pennsylvania well. Meyn was already drilling for oil in Dithmarschen. Using simple hand tools he searched for black gold. He didn’t strike it rich. He found bituminous sands and oil pastels. Still his efforts were groundbreaking. The first oil drilling attempt anywhere in the world.

His work extended beyond oil. Meyn was a dedicated geologist. He collected over 1500 rock samples. These samples form the basis of the Geological Collection at the state university. He championed the use of artificial fertilizers. He tirelessly convinced skeptical farmers of their value. His advocacy transformed agriculture in Schleswig-Holstein.

He wasn’t just a scientist. Meyn was also a successful entrepreneur. He established a factory for building and fertilizer materials. Sadly a fire destroyed his initial venture. He rebuilt stronger than before. Creating a factory for chemical fertilizers. He even contributed to local journalism. Sharing his knowledge and expertise in the Itzehoer Nachrichten.

He suffered a stroke during a business trip to Hamburg. He died in Uetersen in 1878. This Stele stands as a testament to his achievements. A quiet tribute to a man of many talents. A visionary far ahead of his time. A true pioneer of Schleswig-Holstein. He is honored by a street named after him at Kiel University. A school in Uetersen bears his name. His legacy lives on.
