Imagine 1856. Years before Edwin Drake’s famous Pennsylvania well. Meyn was already drilling for oil in Dithmarschen. Using simple hand tools he searched for black gold. He didn’t strike it rich. He found bituminous sands and oil pastels. Still his efforts were groundbreaking. The first oil drilling attempt anywhere in the world.
His work extended beyond oil. Meyn was a dedicated geologist. He collected over 1500 rock samples. These samples form the basis of the Geological Collection at the state university. He championed the use of artificial fertilizers. He tirelessly convinced skeptical farmers of their value. His advocacy transformed agriculture in Schleswig-Holstein.
He wasn’t just a scientist. Meyn was also a successful entrepreneur. He established a factory for building and fertilizer materials. Sadly a fire destroyed his initial venture.
