From a neglected patch of land to a vibrant community hub, that’s the story of Dr. Loesch Family Park. For nearly three decades, Dr. Rev. Bill Loesch lived across from the park, then known as Cronin/Wainwright Park. He dedicated himself to transforming this unassuming space. He planted flowers and tirelessly advocated for improvements. His vision? A safe and inviting gathering place for everyone. Dr. Loesch Family Park officially opened in July 2012. It stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment. This 2.24-acre park is more than just swings and slides. It’s a place where community thrives. The park’s revitalization included a significant investment of over $1,000,000. This funding fueled a complete transformation. The basketball court now boasts NBA regulation size, complete with lights. A second, smaller court caters to younger players. This thoughtful addition ensures a safe and inclusive environment for all ages and skill levels. The park’s design encourages an active lifestyle. Walking paths wind through the grounds. A diagonal path accommodates those heading to the nearby Shawmut T station, a well-worn route established by community members over the years. The playground, once a simple space, now caters to children of all ages. It features a water spray area, a popular spot during hot summer days, and ample seating for parents. Thirteen benches now dot the park. This increase from a mere two benches before the renovations highlights Dr. Loesch’s focus on creating spaces for connection. Eco-friendliness was also a priority in the park’s redesign. Groundwater infiltration systems manage water from the spray feature. Remote-controlled court lights conserve energy. Bike racks at each entrance encourage sustainable transportation. Twenty new shade trees provide respite from the sun. Even the playground’s rubber surfacing is made from recycled materials. Dr. Loesch’s advocacy extended to the smallest details. He championed the rubber surfacing. He recognized its safety benefits over wood chips or mulch, where dangerous objects could be hidden. Though pleased with the renovations, Dr. Loesch’s vision extends beyond the completed upgrades. He continues to advocate for additions such as picnic tables and more trees. He actively engages with the community, seeking input on further improvements. Dr. Loesch Family Park is more than a park. It embodies the spirit of community, perseverance, and a dedication to creating a better environment for all. It’s a testament to the impact one person can have. It’s a reminder that small acts of service, multiplied over time, can transform a neighborhood and leave a lasting legacy.
