“A healthy society should not have only one voice.” These words resonate deeply as we stand before the Dr. Li Wenliang Memorial Bench Plaque. This seemingly simple bench tells a powerful story. It speaks of courage, loss, and the importance of speaking truth.
Dr. Li Wenliang was an ophthalmologist in Wuhan, China. In December 2019, he noticed a mysterious new virus. He warned his colleagues on social media urging them to take precautions. However, the Wuhan government censured him. They forced him to write an apology letter acknowledging his warning was a “rumor” and a “crime”.
Tragically, Dr. Li contracted the virus while treating a patient. Even from his hospital bed, he continued to speak out. His words “A healthy society should not have only one voice” became a rallying cry. Sadly, Dr. Li died of COVID-19 on February 7, 2020 at the age of 34.
This memorial is particularly special. It is the only one dedicated to Dr. Li Wenliang in the world. The Dr. Li Wenliang Memorial Bench Plaque sits inside the Central Park West and West 96th Street entrance. It is a quintessential New York City memorial.
Installed in April 2022, the plaque reads “In memorial of Dr. Li Wenliang who sounded the alarm on Covid-19”. Below this inscription is Dr. Li’s powerful quote in Chinese. The donor of this bench wished to remain anonymous. They wanted the bench to be seen by many people so it was placed near an entrance to Central Park.
The Dr. Li Wenliang Memorial Bench Plaque serves as a gathering place. It allows Chinese people in New York City to reflect. It helps them form a sense of solidarity. It stands as a symbol of freedom of speech.
Fengsuo Zhou a Chinese human-rights activist said “Dr. Li was a reluctant whistleblower”. Zhou added “His censure, tragic death, and last words made him a national martyr for freedom of speech.” Zhou believes that if Dr. Li’s voice had been heard earlier, the world could have been better prepared.
This bench is more than just a place to sit. It’s a reminder of the importance of truth. It’s a tribute to a brave doctor who dared to speak out. As you sit here take a moment to remember Dr. Li Wenliang. Consider the power of your own voice. Let’s honor his memory by speaking truth and fighting for a society where every voice matters.
