World War I interrupted his education. He served on the Western Front. A gas attack left him with lasting health problems. Despite this he continued his studies. He earned a doctorate in engineering. His thesis focused on the logistical challenges in the German oil industry. A fascinating topic for a young man.

After working for various companies his father’s death in 1947 changed everything. He inherited the family business. With his brother Otto he transformed it. They shifted from wholesale trade to manufacturing. In 1948 they unveiled Germany’s first battery-powered forklift truck. A pivotal moment in the company’s history. A revolutionary product for the time.

The company grew rapidly. Dr Jungheinrich expanded production facilities. He initially worked in a small workshop in Barmbek. Later he moved to larger premises in Billbrook. Eventually he secured a large plot of land in Wandsbek. He invested heavily in the site constructing large factory halls.

International expansion followed. He opened sales offices in Austria Sweden and Italy. His relentless innovation continued. He introduced a new electrically powered forklift with a driver’s seat. Later he launched the Retrak Schubmaster forklift. This was significantly more stable and maneuverable than its predecessors.

Dr Jungheinrich’s vision extended beyond his company. He recognized the importance of education. The Dr Friedrich Jungheinrich Foundation was established in 2004. It provides scholarships for students of mechanical engineering and industrial engineering.
