This unassuming plaque marks a place of incredible history. The Dr. Benjamin Jesse Covington and the Covington House Plaque commemorates a man who not only overcame immense adversity but also dedicated his life to serving others. Born in 1869 to formerly enslaved parents in Marlin, Texas, Dr. Covington’s journey was marked by resilience and a commitment to uplifting his community. Imagine young Benjamin tending to sick farm animals, honing the skills that would later make him a renowned physician. He graduated from Hearne Baptist College in 1892, but his teaching career was cut short by racist attitudes. Undeterred, he enrolled in Meharry Medical College, graduating in 1900. Dr. Covington moved to Houston in 1903 and practiced medicine for 58 years, becoming a pillar of the Black community. He established a 10-bed hospital on Canal Street, later co-founding Union Hospital and the Houston Negro Hospital, now known as Riverside General Hospital. The Covington home, once standing on this very spot, was a haven for Black travelers during the Jim Crow era, a testament to the family’s generosity. Today, the Dr. Benjamin Jesse Covington and the Covington House Plaque serves as a reminder of their enduring legacy, a legacy of perseverance, compassion, and unwavering dedication to equality and healthcare.
