Can love and legacy be etched in stone? Here at Dr. and Mrs. King’s Tomb, the answer seems to be a resounding yes. Dr. and Mrs. King’s Tomb isn’t just a place of mourning. It’s a testament to a life dedicated to justice, a love story that intertwined with the fight for equality, and a legacy that continues to inspire. The tomb, constructed of Georgia marble, a nod to Dr. King’s Southern roots, is located on the grounds of the King Center, right across Auburn Avenue from the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park Visitor Center. Dr. King wasn’t originally laid to rest here. Following his assassination in 1968, he was buried at South-View Cemetery. Only in 1970 were his remains moved to this location, then a much simpler site. The reflecting pool, the eternal flame symbolizing the enduring pursuit of his dream, and Freedom Hall were all later additions. When Coretta Scott King passed away in 2006, the original tomb was too small to accommodate both. It was enlarged, and she was laid to rest beside her husband, solidifying Dr. and Mrs. King’s Tomb as a shared space of remembrance and a powerful symbol of their united struggle. The tomb is more than just a final resting place. It’s a living monument. It’s a place where visitors come to reflect, to remember, and to be inspired by the enduring legacy of two extraordinary individuals. Dr. and Mrs. King’s Tomb stands as a reminder that even in death, the fight for justice, peace, and equality continues, fueled by the love and legacy of those who dedicated their lives to that cause.
