A $20 billion price tag. That’s the estimated cost to build what you see around you now: Downtown Dubai. Before the year 2000, this area was simply known as Umm Al Tarif. Now, it stands as a testament to Dubai’s ambition.

Downtown Dubai is a large-scale mixed-use complex. Emaar, a real estate development company, developed it. This area covers 2 square kilometers. It is home to some of the city’s most famous landmarks. These include the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, and the Dubai Fountain.

Look up. Soaring above us is the Burj Khalifa. It is the centerpiece of Downtown Dubai. The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. It is also the tallest human-made structure ever built. It reaches a staggering 828 meters. Construction began in 2004. It was completed in January 2010. The Burj Khalifa cost an estimated $1.5 billion. It holds six world records. These include the “tallest free-standing structure” and the “elevator with the longest running distance”.

To our right sits The Dubai Mall. It is the world’s second-largest shopping mall by total area. It boasts 1300 stores. The Dubai Mall also offers attractions. There is an Olympic-size ice rink, an aquarium, and a water zoo. In 2018, Emaar Properties opened VR Park. It is an entertainment complex that blends augmented and virtual reality. In the heart of Downtown Dubai, you will find the Dubai Fountain. It cost Dh 800 million. That is about $217 million. It is the largest choreographed fountain system. WET Design, from California, designed it. They also designed the fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. The Dubai Fountain is illuminated by 6600 lights and 50 colored projectors. It shoots water 150 meters into the air. The performances are set to classical, contemporary Arabic, and world music.

The Address Downtown Dubai is a supertall skyscraper. It rises 306 meters. It sits alongside the Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa Lake. This hotel and residential tower has 63 floors. In 2015, a fire broke out during a New Year’s Eve party. The tower’s reconstruction finished in 2018.

Step inside the Dubai Opera. This 2000-seat performing arts center opened in 2016. Its design is based on the classic Arabian dhow. It hosts theater, opera, ballet, concerts, and comedy shows.

Notice the 3.5 km road encircling Downtown Dubai. This is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard. It was renamed in 2012. It pays tribute to Dubai’s ruler. The boulevard is known for its many restaurants, cafes, and outdoor art.

Every year, Downtown Dubai hosts a New Year’s Eve Gala. It features a massive firework display on the Burj Khalifa. In 2018, Emaar’s “Light Up 2018” broke a world record. It was the “largest light and sound show on a single building.”
