Welcome to the Downtown Aquarium in Houston. This isn’t just any aquarium. It’s a vibrant hub built from two historic Houston landmarks: Fire Station No 1 and the Central Waterworks Building. The transformation began in 1999 when the city sought proposals for redevelopment. Landry’s plan won. They envisioned a stunning aquarium within these repurposed structures.
Opened in 2003 the Downtown Aquarium now boasts over 200 species of aquatic animals. Imagine exploring a 17th-century Spanish galleon shipwreck exhibit. You’ll see vibrant coral reefs teeming with life. Giant Pacific octopuses moray eels and colorful fish surround you.
Venture into the Louisiana Swamp exhibit. See alligators turtles and other Gulf Coast creatures. Then journey to the Rainforest. Marvel at macaws piranhas and emerald tree boas.
The Sunken Temple exhibit is filled with unusual creatures. Lionfish electric eels and even a reticulated python call this place home. Explore the Gulf of Mexico exhibit featuring an oil rig habitat. Nurse sharks and other ocean dwellers swim around. The Discovery rig is another area featuring seahorses and other unique creatures.
But the Downtown Aquarium is more than just aquatic life. There’s a Shark Voyage a train ride that takes you through a massive shark habitat. The aquarium’s white tiger exhibit caused controversy. Animal rights activists protested. The Downtown Aquarium defended their care stating their tigers received exemplary care and the exhibit was accredited. Eventually a $4 million outdoor habitat was created for the tigers.
