“A doctor’s true wealth isn’t measured in escudos, but in the well-being of his patients.” These words, spoken by Doutor Maurício Esteves Pereira Pinto, echo the essence of his life. Here, at the Doutor Maurício Esteves Pereira Pinto Bust in Praça da Corujeira, we remember a man who embodied compassion and selfless service. Born in 1924 in Canelas, near Porto, Doutor Maurício dedicated his life to healing and helping others. He began his medical journey at the University of Porto, graduating in 1950. That same year, he started his clinic, offering care to the most vulnerable members of society. He also volunteered at Sanatório D. Manuel II for two years, gaining experience across various departments. Specializing in pulmonology, he restructured and led several dispensaries, notably those of the IANT (National Assistance Institute for Tuberculosis Patients). Doutor Maurício’s impact stretched beyond traditional medical settings. He supported various recreational and sports associations in Campanhã and Bonfim. He even served as President of Clube Desportivo de Portugal. His commitment to the community extended to politics as a founder of the Socialist Party of Campanhã. He was respected across party lines for his integrity. Doutor Maurício’s clinic in Campanhã was a sanctuary for all. Its doors were always open. He treated those who could afford it and those who couldn’t, locals and those from afar. Tragically, his life was cut short by a traffic accident on June 24, 1975. The people of Campanhã, whom he served so faithfully, mourned their beloved doctor. They unveiled a plaque in his honor on December 17, 1975, on the street where he lived. The Doutor Maurício Esteves Pereira Pinto Bust, unveiled on May 1, 1977, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. It bears the inscription: “To Dr. Maurício, homage from the people.” Even today, the people of Campanhã hold an annual pilgrimage to his grave on the anniversary of his death. This simple act of remembrance speaks volumes about the profound impact Doutor Maurício had on their lives. His legacy lives on, not only in bronze and stone but in the hearts of those he touched.
