Here on Harris Promenade stands a solemn sentinel. It is the Douglas War Memorial. The Douglas War Memorial honors the courage and sacrifice of those who fell in the Great Wars.

The Douglas War Memorial is more than just stone and sculpture. It is a place of remembrance. It’s a place to reflect on the human cost of war. The Douglas War Memorial connects us to the island’s history.

Designed by Ewart Crellin, the Douglas War Memorial stands approximately 50 feet high. Its stone base rises in four steps. A tall column of Manx granite supports a three-ton figure. This figure is “The Manxman”. Ewart Crellin also designed the Lezayre War Memorial. Harry Hems & Co. carved the sculptures. They also carved the St. Matthews War Memorial.

The Douglas War Memorial’s design was unveiled to the public in 1922. It was erected in May 1924. Initially, it was dedicated to those who fell in World War I. Later, names of fallen World War II members were added.

Look closely at the front facade of the Douglas War Memorial. You will see sculptures of a wreath and holy cross. Rolls of names and copper vases for flowers are affixed to the base. The inscriptions read: “Douglas commemorates the loyalty, courage, and self sacrifice of those who fell in the Great Wars 1914-1918, 1939-1945.” Another inscription states: “These are they who for their country & freedoms sake loved not their lives unto the death therefore they shall be as the stones of a crown lifted up as an ensign upon this land.” These words are separated over four sides of the memorial.

The Douglas War Memorial originally stood on what was once a bandstand area. It was designed with a flower garden and guard rail surrounding it.

Take a moment to appreciate the stunning backdrop of the Isle of Man’s coastline. The peaceful atmosphere enhances the experience at the Douglas War Memorial. The promenade itself is perfect for a leisurely stroll. You can absorb the beauty of the Isle of Man’s natural landscape while paying respects.

Visiting early in the morning offers a quieter experience. The lighting is also better for photographs. Take a moment to read the inscriptions. They provide insight into the sacrifices made. Combine your visit with a walk along the promenade. Enjoy the coastal views and nearby attractions. Consider visiting during sunset. The sun casts a warm glow over the Douglas War Memorial. It also illuminates the sea.

As you stand here, remember the words etched in stone. Remember the sacrifices made. The Douglas War Memorial stands as a testament to their courage. It ensures their stories will never be forgotten. Let us honor their memory by striving for a world where such sacrifice is never again needed.
