Over 200 million euros. That’s how much Breuninger invested in this place. Welcome to the Dorotheen-Quartier.

This stunning complex sits in the heart of Stuttgart. It’s nestled between the Altes Schloss the Stuttgart Markthalle and the Breuninger flagship store. You see it all before you. This wasn’t always here though.

Before this modern marvel stood older buildings. The Dorotheen-Quartier replaced them. The demolition alone was massive. 160000 tons of debris were removed. That’s a lot of rubble. The construction was a major undertaking. It took years. The project started in 2007. The groundbreaking was in 2015. The official opening was in May 2017. Architect Stefan Behnisch designed this impressive structure.

The name Dorotheen-Quartier recalls the former Dorotheenplatz. The project sparked public debate. Some criticized its focus on consumerism and lack of community spaces. Others celebrated its modern design and revitalization of the area. Originally the plans were different. They included the Hotel Silber. That building however has a dark past. It was the Gestapo headquarters from 1937 to 1945. It was nearly destroyed in WWII and later rebuilt. Now it stands as a stark reminder. The plans changed to preserve it. A memorial will be installed there.

The Dorotheen-Quartier today boasts around 11000 square meters of shops and restaurants. Luxury brands share space with bookstores cafes and even electric car showrooms. There is something for everyone here. The three buildings have distinctive facades. Natural stone aluminum and glass feature prominently. The roofs are especially striking. They are designed to evoke a glacier landscape. They’re magnificent. There is a parking garage with space for 350 cars.

The Dorotheen-Quartier is more than just a shopping destination. It is a significant part of Stuttgart’s urban landscape. It represents a blend of old and new a story of transformation and remembrance. It has become a dynamic hub in Stuttgart. A lively meeting place in the city. It is a testament to ambition controversy and ultimately the renewal of the city’s heart. Enjoy exploring it.
