A church that resembles a fortress. That’s what you might think at first glance when you see Dormition Abbey. This grand structure on Mount Zion isn’t your typical Jerusalem church. Unlike the rectangular churches scattered throughout the city, Dormition Abbey boasts a rounded design. Its central building, wings, and towers all follow this unique blueprint. Even its cone-shaped dome, a rarity in Jerusalem’s skyline, sets it apart. This architectural marvel, completed in 1910, holds a significant place in Christian tradition. It’s believed to mark the spot where Mary, mother of Jesus, breathed her last. The name “Dormition” itself reflects this belief, meaning “falling asleep”. The abbey’s history is as layered as its architecture. Before it became Dormition Abbey, this site housed the Hagia Sion Cathedral, destroyed by Persians in 614 AD. Centuries later, a Crusader church rose from the ruins, only to be destroyed again. The land lay unused for 500 years, until a German Emperor, William II, stepped in. He purchased the land in 1898 and gifted it to the Catholic Church, paving the way for the Dormition Abbey we see today. Inside, the abbey is just as remarkable. Vivid mosaics adorn the walls, depicting scenes from Christianity and Benedictine history. One striking mosaic sits above the main altar, showing Mary with baby Jesus. Look closer, and you’ll see Jesus holding an open book inscribed with the words: “I am the light of the world.” The abbey’s crypt holds a poignant scene: a life-size statue of Mary, sculpted in wood and ivory, lying in eternal repose. The dome above features mosaics of six influential women from the Bible: Eve, Miriam, Jael, Judith, Ruth, and Esther. Dormition Abbey is more than just a place of worship; it’s a testament to resilience, faith, and the enduring power of history.
