Picture this. A landscape etched with the contours of ancient mountains. This is Dorim-dong. Not the concrete jungle you see today but a fortress-like setting. Centuries ago Dorim-dong was known as Dojimiri or Dwaeumiri. Its name reflected its protective mountain landscape.

Dorim-dong’s story begins long before the skyscrapers. During the Joseon period it thrived as an agricultural heartland. The moist soil nurtured barley millet maize and beans. Near Dorimcheon buckwheat and adzuki beans flourished. The construction of levees further boosted barley production. Imagine farmers tending their fields under the watchful gaze of the mountains. This was a time of simple living close to nature.

This tranquil agricultural scene was once divided into smaller areas. Names like Moratmal Dwaejimaeul and Jumakgeori marked these natural boundaries. In administrative records it appeared as Doyamiri. In 1914 it became Dorim-ri a part of Buk-myeon. Then in 1936 it joined Gyeongseongbu known as Dorimjeong. Finally in 1946 Dorim-dong and Saok-dong now Munrae-dong were formed through a subdivision.

Dorim-dong’s transformation is a testament to Seoul’s evolution. From an agrarian haven nestled among hills to a modern residential area. This dynamic neighborhood reveals a rich past hidden beneath its present-day appearance. It is a story of adaptation a story of change. The spirit of Dorim-dong endures a spirit woven into the very fabric of Seoul itself.

As you stand here today picture those farmers. Visualize the levees. Imagine the mountains. Feel the rich history of this place. Dorim-dong is more than just a neighborhood. It is a living legacy a poignant reminder of Seoul’s enduring resilience. It is a story waiting to be discovered layer by layer.
