Imagine the builders. They raised these walls on the foundations of something older. Something far older. Professors Wirth and Hoppert investigated. They discovered that parts of the church’s base go back 700 years. They sit on ancient chapel foundations. They are a remarkable find.
The church tower a later addition boasts a weather vane marked 1739. It’s a tangible link to the past. The timber-framed nave with its sandstone cladding bears witness to time’s relentless march. Its simple Baroque interior remains largely unchanged. This is a gift. It allows us to step into the past. To experience the space as it was hundreds of years ago.
Look closely at the altar. The pulpit and the altar itself are from the 18th century. But the most ancient artifact is the large crucifix. It dates from the 16th century. It’s older than the current church itself. It’s a powerful symbol.
The church wasn’t always peaceful. In 1997 a church construction association formed. Its aim was to restore the building. It disbanded in 2007 its work complete. Sadly two bells cast in 1740 by the Erfurt bell founder Nikolaus Jonas Sorber were melted down during World War II. Yet the church endures.
The Dorfkirche Wallichen also serves as a pilgrim church. It sits on the Jakobspilgerweg the route from Görlitz to Vacha. It’s a significant stop for those following this ancient pathway. A pilgrim stamp and guestbook await the modern day traveler.
The annual St John’s Day celebration is a joyous event. It brings together the community and beyond. Music fills the air. Food and laughter abound.
