Traces of history whisper here. This is the Dorfkirche Malchow. Its story is one of faith, destruction, and remembrance. Once a village centerpiece, the Dorfkirche Malchow now stands as a ruin. It reminds us of the ravages of war.
Let’s step back to the 13th century. German settlers founded Malchow around 1230. They built a church in the late 13th century. It featured a rectangular hall and a striking tower. The Dorfkirche Malchow showcased the transition from late Romanesque to early Gothic styles.
Time marched on, and in the late 17th century, changes came. Paul von Fuchs, a local landowner, initiated renovations. The hall was rebuilt with brick. The original fieldstone base was kept. A three-sided choir was added. The fieldstone tower was plastered. A wooden lantern was added to its top.
The Dorfkirche Malchow received interior upgrades too. An organ was installed. Simple altar stood ready. Finely crafted choir stalls were added. A brass baptismal bowl depicted Adam and Eve. A silver chalice was adorned with evangelist reliefs.
Prinz Markgraf Ludewig contributed to the church. His donation included windows and new choir areas. An inscription commemorated his generosity. By the early 19th century, Heinrich Wohler documented the church. His drawings captured its appearance and details.
Tragedy struck in April 1945. In the war’s final days, German forces destroyed the Dorfkirche Malchow. They feared it would offer the Red Army vantage points. The Dorfkirche Malchow was intentionally blown up.
The building was never rebuilt. However, the community created a memorial. A wooden bell tower stands. A small brick chapel serves as a place of worship. The Dorfkirche Malchow parish continues its work. Valuable artifacts are safeguarded in the parish house.
A fragment of the former choir remains. It stands as a war memorial. A bronze figure of a clergyman marks the spot. The words “Friede auf Erden” meaning “Peace on Earth” are inscribed. Piles of old fieldstones lie nearby. Some stones were used to rebuild Berlin’s Nikolaikirche.
The Dorfkirche Malchow’s cemetery also holds memorials. One commemorates nineteen local men. They died in World War One. Another is dedicated to an unknown soldier.
Paul Freiherr von Fuchs was a key figure. He was a patron of the church. Sophie Charlotte often visited Fuchs. She used his library. Johann Porst served as pastor. Later, he became a royal confessor. Heinrich Simon, a banker, is buried here. Karl Lohmann, a jurist, also rests in this cemetery.
