A weathered stone whispers tales of centuries. This is the Dorfkirche Mahlow.

For generations this church has stood sentinel. It’s a testament to faith. It’s a silent observer of Mahlow’s history. Built in the latter half of the 13th century its foundations are steeped in medieval times. Imagine the craftsmen shaping the fieldstones. They created the church’s sturdy walls.

The Dorfkirche Mahlow wasn’t always as we see it today. Between 1755 and 1758 it underwent a significant renovation. Experts believe the choir was expanded. The south portal was added. A new church tower pierced the sky. The previously pointed arched windows were enlarged. The interior was completely redesigned. A true transformation.

The Dorfkirche Mahlow’s history is punctuated by both triumph and near disaster. In 1887 a magnificent organ by Wilhelm Remler found its home here. A century later in 1935 the tower was painstakingly repaired. Sadly years of neglect followed. By 2003 the ceiling threatened to collapse. The church was closed. Urgent restoration work ensued.

Imagine the community rallying. They worked tirelessly to save their beloved church. In 2004 Easter services were held again. The renovated organ filled the church with its glorious sound. The restoration was a beacon of hope a symbol of resilience. In 2009 a new sanitary facility was added. Modern convenience complements historical significance.

Look closely at the church’s architecture. Notice the carefully hewn fieldstones of the choir. This could be a result of the 18th-century renovation. The original might have been different. The choir features two large segmental blind arches. Their form is emphasized by fascias and rectangular panels below them.

The nave is also of fieldstone. These stones however are more precisely shaped and layered. Double-scored plaster fills the spaces between the stones. A rectangular Baroque doorway graces the south wall. Above it is an oculus a round window. Two large segmental arched windows flank the doorway. Three more are on the north wall. The gabled roof is topped with dormers.

The west tower matches the nave’s width. It’s built from hewn fieldstones. A pointed arched doorway remains from the church’s original construction. A simple stepped frame of red brick is incorporated. The upper square story is clad in wood. Two sound arcades face west. One arcade graces each of the other sides. A 1508 bell hangs within. It’s the oldest bell in the Teltow region. A pyramidal roof crowns the tower. A globe weathervane and star complete the spire. It is indeed magnificent.

Inside the Dorfkirche Mahlow is a treasure trove of history. The pulpit altar features a curved pulpit basket with volutes. Above is a five-sided sound cover. It’s adorned with a radiant sun and the monogram FR. This stands for Fridericus Rex honoring Frederick II. It dates back to the mid-18th century. A horseshoe gallery rests on Tuscan order columns. It’s expanded west to make room for the organ. Biblical quotations decorate the panels. A vault enhances the transition to the church’s flat-ceilinged interior. The organ itself a marvel of craftsmanship is a testament to the church’s enduring spirit.

The Dorfkirche Mahlow is more than a building. It’s a living story. It’s a narrative of faith perseverance and community. This is a story etched in stone. It’s a story told in the ringing of the ancient bell. It’s a story that continues to unfold for all who visit.
