Gazing at the Dorfkirche Lichterfelde, can you sense the echoes of centuries past? This unassuming fieldstone structure whispers tales of resilience, from its humble Cistercian beginnings around 1300 to its modern-day role as a community cornerstone. The Dorfkirche Lichterfelde wasn’t always adorned with a towering steeple. Initially, a simple wooden ridge turret graced its roof, a testament to the Cistercian order’s emphasis on simplicity. In 1539, a wave of religious change swept through the region as the nobles of Teltow embraced the Protestant Reformation. This shift saw Lichterfelde and Steglitz briefly united with Giesensdorf, sharing a pastor. However, the Dorfkirche Lichterfelde’s congregation maintained its independence. The Thirty Years’ War, a tumultuous period of conflict, left its mark on the Dorfkirche Lichterfelde, leaving it in ruins. Decades passed before its resurrection in 1701. This revival, thanks to the Prussian State Minister Daniel Ludolfph von Danckelmann, included the addition of a tower. The tower, a symbol of renewal, bears a poignant symbol: a pelican tearing its breast to feed its young, an emblem of Christ’s sacrifice. Two bells reside within the tower, their chimes resonating through time. During the 18th century, the Dorfkirche Lichterfelde expanded to accommodate the families of local nobility. Grufts were constructed for the von Bülow and Béguelin families, becoming silent witnesses to the passage of generations. The year 1817 brought the gift of music with the installation of an organ, later replaced by a Schuke organ in 1941. The Dorfkirche Lichterfelde underwent a significant transformation in 1938-1939. The Béguelin family’s crypt was reimagined as the church’s entrance, its former occupants reinterred beneath the floor. Further renovations in 1960 saw the vibrant hues of the painted ceiling beams muted under a layer of gray. The late 20th and early 21st centuries brought new challenges. The removal of toxic wood preservatives during a 2000 tower restoration marked the beginning of an extensive and prolonged period of renovation. Harmful substances discovered within the church necessitated a second, more comprehensive restoration. This endeavor, delayed by unforeseen circumstances, finally concluded in October 2022, ensuring the Dorfkirche Lichterfelde’s continued presence in the heart of the community. The Dorfkirche Lichterfelde stands as a testament to endurance, its stones imbued with the stories of generations past.
