On a gentle hill overlooking the tranquil Dorfteich in Britz, stands the Dorfkirche Britz. This unassuming fieldstone church, dating back to around 1300, holds centuries of stories within its weathered walls. Its location, slightly removed from the main village, is unusual. It’s reminiscent of the Komtureikirche Tempelhof or the church in Ihlow, both sharing a similar secluded setting. The Dorfkirche Britz embodies the architectural style of a “Chorquadratkirche,” a characteristic of early Gothic design, suggesting origins in the late 13th century. However, the quality of its fieldstone masonry, lacking the precise, squared blocks of earlier structures, hints at a later construction date, possibly in the 14th century. Architectural historian Marcus Cante places it in the “early 14th century, presumably around 1310.” Adding to the intrigue is a southern addition to the choir. While it resembles a medieval sacristy, already present in Heinrich Wohlers’ 1834 drawing before the major 1888 renovation, its more refined stonework raises questions. It’s possible this section was added later, perhaps in 1766, coinciding with the construction of the family vault. Through the centuries, Dorfkirche Britz has undergone numerous transformations. During the Baroque period, the exterior was plastered, and larger windows were installed. A timber roof turret, erected in 1713 and crowned with a pointed spire, featured a weathervane bearing the year 1689. The church’s Baroque altar, a prominent feature, was installed around 1720. In 1766, the present sacristy was added as a burial chapel for the family of Prussian Foreign Minister Ewald Friedrich Graf von Hertzberg. The church underwent its most significant alteration in 1888, under the direction of master builder Carl Busse. A grand tower was added, reflecting the medieval design of a broad, rectangular west tower. It extended well above the eaves of the nave, but with a narrower upper section. Built with squared fieldstones, a visible construction joint clearly marks it as a later addition. New portals and windows were integrated into the fieldstone walls, now freed from their plaster coating. Sadly, World War II brought damage and loss to the Dorfkirche Britz. The tower was simplified during post-war reconstruction, and the historic “Marienglocke,” said to date from 1268, was destroyed in a 1943 air raid. Fragments of this bell now reside in the Museum Neukölln. As part of the restoration efforts, the church received beautiful stained-glass windows by Charles Crodel in 1948, adorning the Christmas and baptismal windows. Between 1955 and 1959, the interior was carefully restored to reflect its historical design, and the Baroque altar was returned to its former glory. The Dorfkirche Britz stands today as a testament to its resilient past, whispering tales of bygone eras.
