Did a church ever cost 1,897 Reichstalers, 14 Groschen, and 6 Pfennige? Here at the Dorfkirche Bohnsdorf, it did. This charming Baroque-style church wasn’t always so grand. The Dorfkirche Bohnsdorf we see today, completed in 1757, replaced a much humbler medieval predecessor. Originally, Bohnsdorf likely hosted a Slavic settlement. Around 1230, German settlers arrived and took over. For a time, Bohnsdorf’s Christians likely trekked to Waltersdorf for Sunday services. Records show the first mention of a church in Bohnsdorf appearing around 1450. This original structure was probably a simple, wooden building. The church in Bohnsdorf served as a branch of the Waltersdorf parish. By 1750, the old church, likely weakened by time, was too small for the growing community. After negotiations, a new stone church was approved. The old church was demolished to make way for the present Dorfkirche Bohnsdorf. The new church, designed by Johann Friedrich Lehmann, cost a hefty sum. Construction began in 1755, and the Dorfkirche Bohnsdorf was inaugurated in 1757. Just thirty years later, the church tower needed substantial repairs. In 1792, a storm damaged the roof, and lack of funds led to further deterioration. Then, in 1802, lightning struck the tower, causing significant damage. After much back and forth, repairs were finally carried out in 1803. The tower was again repaired in 1843, receiving a weather vane with the dates 1756 and 1843. More storm damage in 1857 led to the eventual demolition and rebuilding of the tower in 1888. A choir area was added at the same time. The new tower was attached to the northeast corner. During World War I, a large bronze bell and the organ pipes were melted down for the war effort. In 1922, three new steel bells were installed. Renovations and repairs continued throughout the 20th century at the Dorfkirche Bohnsdorf. A heating system was installed in 1935. The tower was simplified in 1938. The interior was renovated. World War II brought more damage. The church persevered, holding services despite boarded-up windows. After the war, the Dorfkirche Bohnsdorf continued to serve its community. In 1956, a Soviet military aircraft struck the church tower, causing considerable damage. This event reminds us that even in times of peace, unexpected events can impact our historical treasures. Through it all, the Dorfkirche Bohnsdorf has remained a steadfast presence in this Berlin community.
