“Lost souls,” a villager whispered in 1484, gesturing towards the newly built Dorfkirche Alt-Wittenau. “The stones are mismatched, just like our fates.” Right here, on this very spot, the whispers turned to awe as the Dorfkirche Alt-Wittenau rose, a testament to resilience amidst turmoil. This isn’t just any church. This is Reinickendorf’s oldest monument, a beacon that has witnessed Berlin’s transformation over centuries, since its simple beginnings as Dalldorf. The Dorfkirche Alt-Wittenau started as a humble fieldstone structure, its mismatched stones, ranging from unusually large to surprisingly small, creating a unique patchwork unlike any other church in Berlin. This unusual mix speaks to the resourcefulness of the villagers who, around 1482, used readily available fieldstones alongside the more expensive bricks. The contrast is stark, visible even today, and a reminder of the economic realities of the time. Inside, remnants of a 1500s winged altarpiece, including figures of St. Nicholas and Anna selbdritt, offer a glimpse into pre-Protestant artistry. Later, a baroque altar, installed in 1722, became the focal point. The church’s journey wasn’t without trials. The Thirty Years’ War left its mark, the 1796 fire likely damaged the tower and roof, necessitating repairs documented by the 1799 date on the weather vane. The original wooden shingles were replaced with slate in 1894, another chapter in the church’s ongoing evolution. Even the ceiling we see today, a wooden barrel vault, is a 20th-century addition, designed to accentuate the baroque altar. As you stand before the Dorfkirche Alt-Wittenau, imagine the echoes of those whispers. They speak of a community that built a sacred space amidst difficulty, a space that continues to serve and inspire, a testament to faith and endurance across the ages.
