Did you ever hear about the gunfire at Donnelly Field? It was a warm May evening in 2023. An argument broke out on the basketball courts at Donnelly Field. Suddenly, shots rang out. Two men, Machyus Battle and Yonayvi Cruceta, were exchanging gunfire. A stray bullet hit a 22-year-old woman. Cruceta was also shot. Thankfully, neither injury was life-threatening. Both men were later arrested. This incident, though tragic, is a small part of Donnelly Field’s story. Donnelly Field, nestled near Kendall and Inman Squares, isn’t just a place of conflict. It’s a beloved community hub. This medium-sized park, always open and accessible, features two little league fields, a softball field, and batting cages for aspiring athletes. Two basketball courts provide space for friendly competition. A multi-purpose field and fitness equipment offer additional recreational options. Benches and drinking fountains are available. The flat, cement paths make it easy to stroll around. Donnelly Field isn’t just about sports. The open green space invites visitors to toss a frisbee or play catch. In June 2023, the park hosted a StoryWalk Cambridge event. Families strolled around the field, reading pages from children’s books posted along the path. Donnelly Field, with its blend of sports, recreation, and community events, offers something for everyone.
