Seven hundred years old. That’s how long Dongyue Temple has stood. Imagine the stories its stones could tell.

Welcome to Beijing Dongyue Temple a Taoist temple. It’s one of the largest in northern China. This magnificent temple is dedicated to the God of Mount Tai one of China’s Five Great Mountains. The temple is more than just a place of worship. It’s a treasure trove of history and culture.

Dongyue Temple was built in 1319 during the Yuan Dynasty. It took years of dedicated effort. Zhang Liusun a Yuan Dynasty official started the project. His disciple Wu Quanjie completed the main halls and gate in 1322. The temple was later repaired and renamed in 1447 during the Ming Dynasty. The Qing Dynasty saw further renovations in 1698 and 1761. Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong oversaw these expansions. The temple’s layout is impressive. Three courtyards stretch out. They contain hundreds of rooms. Many were built during the Qing Dynasty using traditional Yuan Dynasty architectural styles.

Walk along Happiness Road. It leads to the main palace Mount Tai Palace. Notice the golden dragons and exquisite paintings on the pillars and roofs. The central hall holds a large statue of the God of Mount Tai. Courtiers surround him. Explore the surrounding halls. Each holds cultural relics. They represent the Yuan Ming and Qing dynasties. The temple is truly a museum of Chinese history.

Don’t miss the Beijing Folklore Museum. It’s housed in a two-story palace within the temple complex. Opened in 1997 it holds ancient clothes handicrafts and folk heritages.

Step through Zhandai Gate also known as Dragon Tiger Gate. This is the gateway to Mount Tai. Marvel at the hip roof and three entrances. Two door-gods and ten imperial guards stand guard.

Look for the yellow glazed archway built in 1602. It stands across Chaowai Street. A red pearl sits atop. Two stone tablets stand on either side. They proclaim “Forever Prosperity of the Empire” and “Worship Mount Tai”.

Dongyue Temple is a living testament to faith history and cultural heritage. It’s a place where ancient spirits and modern visitors converge. Soak in its beauty. Remember its stories. Leave with a sense of awe.
