In 1870, a seed of faith was planted in Guangzhou. American Baptist missionaries established a small gospel hall in a bustling storefront. This humble beginning marked the first chapter in the story of Dongshan Christian Church. Let’s step back in time to 1908. The small congregation had outgrown its original space. The storefront was sold, and a new church was built in the quieter Dongshan district at 9 Sibeitongjin. Dongshan Christian Church officially opened its doors in 1909. The church continued to grow, and by 1927, it underwent a significant expansion. The new two-story structure, complete with a 1,300-seat auditorium, became a beacon of faith in the community. Dongshan Christian Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a pillar of support for the community, establishing a Lord’s Day School, a home for the aged, and taking over the Mu Kuang School for the Blind. The mid-20th century brought challenges. In 1960, during the era of “joint worship,” Dongshan Church merged with several other congregations. It retained its name, showcasing its prominent role. Then, the Cultural Revolution forced the church to close its doors. However, the spirit of Dongshan Christian Church could not be extinguished. In 1979, it became the first Christian church in Guangzhou to reopen after the Cultural Revolution. It reaffirmed its importance as a spiritual center. It even became the headquarters for the Guangzhou Christian Three-Self Patriotic Committee and Guangzhou Christian Council in 1987. In 1999, Dongshan Christian Church received official recognition for its historical and cultural significance. It was designated as a Cultural Relic Protection Unit in Guangzhou. Today, Dongshan Christian Church stands as the largest Christian church in Guangzhou, a testament to its enduring legacy. Its Gothic architecture, with its reinforced concrete structure, covers an area of 3,850 square meters. The church continues to serve a vibrant community of approximately 5,000 registered believers, with around 4,500 people attending services every Sunday.
