The Dongnimmun stands as a powerful emblem. It represents Korea’s desire for self-reliance. This memorial gate in Seoul marks a pivotal shift. It moves away from its historical ties as a tributary state of Qing China.

Built in January 1898, the Dongnimmun’s construction was proposed by Soh Jaipil. He was a key figure in the Independence Club. Also known as Philip Jaisohn, he was the first Korean American.

Before the Dongnimmun, there was the Yeongeunmun. This gate symbolized Joseon’s subservient relationship with China. The demolition of Yeongeunmun paved the way for a new era. The Dongnimmun was born.

King Gojong approved the plan to build the Dongnimmun. He recognized the importance of symbolizing Korea’s break from China’s sphere of influence. The name “Independence Gate” reflects this aspiration.

Citizens contributed to the construction of Dongnimmun. They donated through a public campaign. Soh Jaipil’s newspaper, Tongnip Sinmun, played a crucial role. It rallied support and raised funds.

The design of Dongnimmun took inspiration from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. An unknown Swiss architect, working for the German legation, created the blueprint. Sim Chiseok, a Korean engineer, oversaw the construction. Dongnimmun stands 14.28 meters tall and 11.48 meters wide. It consists of around 1,850 pieces of granite.

Designated as a Historic Site of South Korea in 1963, Dongnimmun has seen changes. It was relocated 70 meters northwest in 1979. This ensured its preservation during city road construction.

Today, Dongnimmun resides in Seodaemun Independence Park. It is easily accessible from Dongnimmun Station. The park also houses the Plinths of Yeongeunmun. These serve as a reminder of the past.

The area around Dongnimmun is full of historical significance. It is near Seodaemun Prison History Hall. This former prison held independence fighters during the Japanese occupation. The park also features a statue of Soh Jaipil. It honors his contributions to Korea’s independence movement.
