Born from the Han River’s embrace Dongjak-gu stands tall. This Seoul district’s name echoes the Dongjaegi Naruteo Ferry. This ferry once plied the waters that define its northern border. A bustling hub of activity it links Seoul’s rich history to its modern dynamism.

Imagine the 17th gu’s creation. It emerged on April 1 1980 a newly formed entity. Previously part of Gwanak District it embarked on its independent journey. Dongjak-gu’s story is one of transformation and growth. Its past is interwoven with the river’s currents. Its future shines bright with ambition.

Dongjak-gu’s story extends far beyond its official birth. Centuries before its formal establishment this area pulsed with life. King Jangsu’s conquest in 475 AD laid the groundwork. The Hangang River a lifeline provided fertile lands and strategic positioning. The area flourished under Baekje’s reign. Then the Goryeo Dynasty and eventually Joseon’s.

Noryangjin’s fertile plains and the chestnut forests of Yuljin provided sustenance. The Nodeulgang River another tributary of the Hangang. It connected this region to Hanseong Castle. The Dongjaegi and Nodeul Naru ferries facilitated trade. They connected the region to Samnam the three southern provinces. This ensured a strategic military position. The area was economically prosperous.

The rise of Hanseong now Seoul as the capital enhanced Dongjak-gu’s significance. Royal connections shaped the district. King Jeongjo’s annual pilgrimages to Hyeollyungwon Temple in Suwon. These involved temporary bridges across the Hangang. These were massive undertakings requiring significant labor and resources. The Nodeul Ferry became a hub of construction and celebration.

The area’s strategic importance is reflected in the establishment of a military post in 1703. This was under the command of Geunwiyeong. The district’s boundaries evolved over time with administrative reshuffles and the impacts of various dynasties. But its connection to the Hangang and its strategic location ensured its prominence throughout history.

Today Dongjak-gu boasts Chongshin University. This stands alongside the Seoul campus of Chung-Ang University and Soongsil University. Noryangjin-dong near Noryangjin Station is a haven for Hagwons. These private educational institutes prepare students for crucial examinations. Dongjak-gu seamlessly blends its rich past with its vibrant present. It remains a dynamic force in Seoul.
