On the eastern edge of the Forbidden City, a gate stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. This is the Donghuamen Subdistrict. It’s more than just a gate. It’s a place brimming with stories, where the echoes of emperors and revolutionaries mingle with the footsteps of modern Beijing. Donghuamen Subdistrict is the heart of Dongcheng District. It cradles iconic landmarks like Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City within its 5.35 square kilometers. In 2020, over 38,000 people called this historic subdistrict home. The Donghuamen Subdistrict takes its name from the Donghua Gate, which literally translates to “East China Gate”. This gate, located on the eastern side of the Forbidden City, has served many purposes throughout history. It was once the designated entrance and exit for cabinet officials during the early Qing dynasty. Later, high-ranking officials also gained access through this gate. Interestingly, it was also the traditional exit point for the coffins of deceased emperors, empresses, and empress dowagers, earning it the somber nickname, the “Ghost Gate.” One of the most intriguing mysteries surrounding the Donghua Gate concerns its door nails. While the other three main gates of the Forbidden City boast 81 nails arranged in nine rows of nine, the Donghua Gate has only 72, arranged in eight rows of nine. Numerous theories attempt to explain this discrepancy. Some attribute it to the suicide of Emperor Chongzhen near the gate. Others point to the gate’s association with the crown prince, whose lower status might be reflected in the fewer nails. Still, others believe it relates to the principles of feng shui and the Five Elements. Whatever the true reason, the mystery adds to the gate’s mystique. The Donghuamen Subdistrict has witnessed dramatic events. In 1644, the rebel leader Li Zicheng breached the Forbidden City. Emperor Chongzhen made his final escape through the Donghua Gate before taking his own life on nearby Jingshan Hill. In 1813, the gate was the focal point of a peasant uprising led by Tianlijiao. An attempted infiltration through Donghuamen was thwarted when hidden weapons were discovered, leading to the uprising’s swift failure. Today, the Donghuamen Subdistrict stands as a vibrant blend of the past and present. It’s a place where ancient history and modern life intertwine, inviting visitors to explore its rich tapestry of stories.
