Home to the best Banh Mi in town. That is what you will hear many people say about Dong Phuong Restaurant. Today, we are exploring this culinary gem in New Orleans. Dong Phuong is more than just a restaurant. It’s a cultural landmark that has been serving the community since 1981.

De and Huong Tran opened Dong Phuong. They were Vietnamese immigrants with a dream. Huong used her pastry skills learned from her father’s bakery. De helped recreate his favorite childhood foods.

Initially, Dong Phuong catered to the Vietnamese community. It quickly became a local favorite. The restaurant is known for its Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. Pho, bun thit nuong and banh hoi are some of the dishes served.

But Dong Phuong’s bread truly sets it apart. It supplies the baguette style bread for many local restaurants. These restaurants offer banh mi and other sandwiches. Sara Roahen calls Dong Phuong the Vietnamese Leidenheimer’s. Its bread is also used at Borgne and Tamarind restaurants.

Dong Phuong’s banh mi sandwiches are like Vietnamese po-boys. The New York Times called having a banh mi at Dong Phuong a signal pleasure of the American South.

In 2018, Dong Phuong received the James Beard Foundation’s America’s Classic award. This award honored its timeless appeal and quality food.

Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans hard. Dong Phuong was also affected, but it reopened quickly. The community showed resilience and hard work. After rebuilding, Dong Phuong expanded its customer base. It began delivering baked goods to local restaurants and grocery stores.

Linh Tran Garza is the daughter of the founders and the current president. She said that the family started experimenting with king cakes in 2006. They wanted to offer the Vietnamese community options for king cakes. The family bakes over 60,000 king cakes during the season.

The bakery remains a family affair. Garza’s mother still works seven days a week. The baking tradition runs deep. Garza’s grandfather founded a bakery in Vietnam in 1951. That bakery still operates today.

Dong Phuong is located in the Little Vietnam section of Eastern New Orleans. The bakery is near Mary Queen of Vietnam Catholic Church. These are fixtures of the Vietnamese community.

The restaurant closes early. Make sure to visit for breakfast or lunch. Enjoy the aromas and sample the famous banh mi. Dong Phuong is a testament to Vietnamese culture in New Orleans. It offers delicious food and a rich history. It is a must-visit for anyone exploring New Orleans’ culinary scene.
